First Irish venue to be accredited with BS8901
Aviva Stadium Dublin, part of Lime Venue Portfolio, has achieved the first stage in BS8901 accreditation leading it one step closer to being Ireland’s most environmentally responsible event space.
The iconic Dublin landmark has been accredited with the definitive benchmark for sustainable events: BS8901, a standard associated with sustainability for meetings, conference and events. Venues are first accredited and then work towards full certification; it is anticipated that the venue will achieve its full certification shortly after opening on 14th May 2010.
The stadium has been conceived and constructed to ensure its environmental footprint is intrinsic to both the build process and the longer term daily operation of the conference, meeting and live event facilities.  Aviva Stadium is the first Irish venue to adhere to the standard and in order to achieve the recognition it has undertaken to operate within the BS8901 management system which enhances performance in three key areas:  social, economic and environmental impact in both the local and wider communities.
Using the BS8901 management reporting structure, the stadium engaged with its key stakeholders to identify areas of impact and has created key performance indicators to monitor these.  This means that the KPIs are directly relevant to and measurable within the day-to-day operation and management of all live events hosted at the stadium. These KPIs should be invaluable in helping today’s professional event planners’ fulfil the need to balance their organisations’ corporate social conscience with the need for staging meetings and events.
Aviva Stadium’s team has worked in partnership with the BS8901 accrediting team to create a landmark venue that spearheads sustainability in Ireland.   Throughout the planning and build process, there has been regular consultation and engagement with stakeholders; from local residents and local corporations to fans and ancillary service providers. Reporting of the consultation and subsequent KPIs ensures transparency and credibility in the venue’s performance.
Cailín Keaney, sales and marketing manager, Aviva Stadium said: “By implementing this accreditation and engaging with these groups, our sustainable performance will evolve in line with developments within the sector and take into consideration what is important to the people who support our business.  It will also encourage us to strive constantly to raise the bar of our standards and thereby drive continuous improvement.”
