Northern Spain: Art & Gastronomy

Northern Spain is, without doubt, one of Spain’s newest destinations for the discerning traveller. It’s the perfect place to combine art and gastronomy with its two major towns of Bilbao and San Sebastian it also covers the area known La Rioja.

Bilbao is located in the heart of the Basque Country.
Everyone is familiar with the spectacular sight of Frank Gehry´s famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao which marked the start of the city’s incredible urban renewal programme.  With projects ranging from an amazing new airport by Santiago Calatrava, the arching, skeletal Zubizuri bridge (also by Calatrava) and an award-winning metro system by Norman Foster – there’s lots happening.

San Sebastian is a wonderfully elegant city which sits majestically on the shimmering waters of La Concha beach, and is surrounded by lush green mountains.  Often considered as one of the most beautiful city beach destinations in Europe it is also home to world-class jazz and film festivals and home of many Michelin-starred restaurants.

When talking about Northern Spain, we mustn’t forget the amazing area known as La Rioja – with its fabulous wineries. Its wines which languished in backwater obscurity during the 1980s are, now, de rigueur.
