The very latest (technical) developments in the television world were presented in the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre between 10 and 14 September. The total attendance for the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) was 48,521, a rise over last year’s attendance of 8.7% – making it the second biggest IBC in history. Amsterdam’s welcoming ambience was very much appreciated by the IBC attendees. One of the undoubted highlights was the presentation of Ultra High Definition Television (Super Hi-Vision, SHV), facilitated by a joint venture between the RAI and Dutch telecoms provider KPN.
Super Hi-Vision was presented by exhibitor NHK. The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation displayed live images from the city of Amsterdam on a cinematic screen in a custom-made theatre in the RAI. The size and sharpness of the images and the Dolby 22.2 sound system provided viewers with an extraordinarily realistic representation of what was happening in the city. Super Hi-Vision is expected to be the next standard in digital television.
To make this Super Hi-Vision presentation possible NHK partnered with the IT specialists from Amsterdam RAI and KPN Events & Conferencing. Thanks to a specially laid glass-fibre connection, the premium standard of the IT infrastructure in the RAI and the professionalism of KPN, everything was in place for this groundbreaking demonstration of SHV.
