European Geosciences Conference Stays True to Vienna

The European Geosciences Union – a regular patron of the Austria Center Vienna since 2005 – has decided to stay there for another four years.
At its General Assembly in May 2010, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) discussed the venue for its congresses in the years 2011 thru 2014. The decision taken during the closing meeting of the EGU‘s Council favored Vienna over Paris and Copenhagen. Con-gress organizer Martin Rasmussen summarized the reasons for this decision as follows: “We selected Vienna once again because we found that no other destination can offer us as much at the present time. The tremendous flexibility of the space at the Austria Center Vienna, their knowledge of our congress requirements, but also the cooperation that has grown over the years with the Vienna-based Geological Survey of Austria and the Vienna Tourist Board’s Vienna Convention Bureau were all irrefutable arguments.”
Vienna stands to gain about 180,000 to 200,000 bed nights over the next four years as a result of this decision. This year, for the first time ever, more than ten thousand delegates registered for the EGU‘s General Assembly. “It is particularly rewarding to keep the Euro-pean Geosciences Union as a regular visitor to Vienna,“ explains Christian Mutschlechner, Director of the Vienna Tourist Board’s Vienna Convention Bureau. “This is also an ex-tremely motivating confirmation of our efforts to achieve ‘customer loyalty’ by means of dedicated service, a continuous exchange on the potential for improvement, and the joint development of new ideas.”
Dates of future EGU General Assemblies:
2011: April 3 – 8
2012: April 23 – 27
2013: April 8 – 12
2014: April 27 – Mai 2
