Start of the Installation of the Communication Network for the New Airport Berlin-Brandenburg International BBI

Berlin, 23 September 2010 – At the new Airport Berlin-Brandenburg International BBI the installation of the communication network has started. The entire voice and data communication and security-related applications such as video surveillance and control center communications are integrated into one infrastructure. In the last few months comprehensive tests have been performed for checking the hardware and software for functionality, reliability, security and operability. Now Berlin Airports have given the go-ahead for the installation of the systems. The communication infrastructure will be fully operational as early as in May 2011.

Alcatel-Lucent as general contractor will set up an integrated IP/MPLS network comprising more than 17,000 IP ports. IP/MPLS stands for Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching and offers advantages such fast transmission of data packets. BBI will be the first airport in Germany to operate an integrated IP/MPLS network. The new network will allow to facilitate the network management and to reduce the operating costs. At the same time the flexibility to respond to the fast changing requirements set on the infrastructure will be increased.
