69 units already taken / Around one quarter of the retail and service concepts are from the Berlin-Brandenburg region / Appealing mix of international, domestic and regional brands
The new airport for Germany’s capital city, Berlin-Brandenburg International BBI, is set to open in roughly 18 months. Passengers and visitors can already look forward to a very high standard of dwell time quality at the new airport, which will be firmly rooted in the surrounding region. Today, Berlin Airports announced the names of the new tenants for the retail and service concessions at the new airport, bringing the present total to 69 tenants. Over a quarter of the new tenants will be presenting typical concepts from the Berlin and Brandenburg region. The new airport’s tenants include Fassbender & Rausch, an Ampelmann store, a museum shop run by Freunde der Preußischen Schlösser und Gärten GmbH (Friends of Prussian Castles and Gardens) and local specialities from the Spreewald region. All tenants – from major chains to single outlets – fought off stiff competition with their winning concepts in a Europe-wide letting process. The operator of the duty free shop and the food services tenants were announced at the end of 2009 and in mid-2010. In this sector, the strong regional focus also serves to clearly set BBI apart from all other international airports.
Professor Dr. Rainer Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Airports, stated: “The choice of retail concepts for BBI is very promising. Passengers will be able to find everything at the new BBI, from typical Berlin shops and local specialities right through to the world’s leading brands. This combination is a perfect match for our airport, and we are certain that our guests from all around the world and people from the region will love it.”
The director of Non Aviation Management at Berlin Airports, Dr. Norbert Minhorst, added: “We have successfully wrapped up the letting process for the new airport. Our future passengers can look forward to an appealing and varied marketplace with themed restaurants and a wide choice of shopping options: international, domestic and local brands and concepts will give the airport a truly unique and distinctive face.”
Dr. Wolfgang Krüger, Managing Director of the Cottbus Chamber of Commerce: “It is very important that regional products are showcased on the shelves of the new airport. The Cottbus Chamber of Commerce provided direct support for companies from south Brandenburg with our project ‘Fit for BBI’ and our brochure ‘Regional products and Specialities’. Our main aim is to help companies boost their sales as well as marketing the region by introducing passengers from all across the globe to typical regional products, e.g. from the Spreewald.”
Showcasing the Berlin region
Berlin and Brandenburg are represented by exciting shops at the new airport, including the Ampelmann store with its iconic red and green traffic light symbols. Look 54 presents fashion for Berlin’s nightlife and Evelin Brandt sells Berlin couture for women who dare to stand out; watchmaker Askania will be selling stylish timepieces, while chocolate company Fassbender & Rausch and confectionary maker Felicitas tempt shoppers with sweet delights. Fine children’s fashions and creative toys are available from the children’s boutique “Die kleine Gesellschaft”. And, naturally, passengers arriving at BBI can get all the information and tips they need for their visit to Berlin and Brandenburg from Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH.
Products from Berlin and Brandenburg will also be strongly represented and prominently positioned in the duty-free and duty-paid shops. The specially featured range “from Spreewald & more” showcases a wealth of delicious culinary specialities from the region: from tangy Spreewald pickled gherkins to fine fruit brandies, tasty Rex Pilsener beer, wonderful Cottbus Baumkuchen, delicious meat products from Golßen and a wide choice of regional sausage specialities, the region’s best products will be presented in an appealing style. The souvenir and gift shops will also focus on products from Berlin and Brandenburg as their core ranges. The Prussian castles and Gardens Foundation will be represented with a museum shop.
An appealing choice in shopping and services
In total, 150 retail units are being created at the airport. On the landside there will be around 4,000 square metres for retail, food and beverages and services. The units are located in the arrivals hall and on the access level above the railway station. The majority of the retail units are located behind the security screening area on the airside. Inside the 9,000 square metre marketplace on level E1 there are 35 retail outlets and 2 service units. Two further retail outlets are located on the main pier, with one more on both of the piers. In the Non-Schengen area passengers will find a duty-free shop leading into around 1,400 square metres of retail outlets, service units and food and beverage concessions, all specifically selected and designed to meet the needs and requirements of an international clientele.
Successful Europe-wide letting process
The letting process for the retail and service units at BBI was divided into three phases: pre-qualification, bidding and negotiations. In the first step more than 500 applications from retailers and service providers were submitted and considered. After the pre-qualification phase 101 bidders were asked to submit concepts, resulting in over 250 proposals. The evaluation of the proposals and the selection of the tenants were governed by four key criteria: financial plan, concept quality, strategic match with the project requirements and the special significance of the proposal for BBI Airport. Negotiations are currently ongoing with selected bidders; all other contracts have been signed.
Car rental services at BBI:
The car rental company counters will be located in the south corner of the arrivals hall in the terminal on the way to the Rental Car Service Centre. Customers can pick up and drop off rental cars at the Rental Car Service Centre, which will be a separate building not far from the terminal. The complete “turn-around” of the rental cars (cleaning, refuelling etc.) will take place here at the Service Centre. This reduces the number of journeys required, thus cutting emissions. The total floor area of the Rental Car Service Centre will be around 60,000m² and it will have more than 1,800 parking spaces.
Travel and tourist services
The travel service counters are located in the northern area of the arrivals hall; tour operators will include alltours Reisecenter, LMS, REWE, Thomas Cook, TUI and Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH, which will have a Welcome Center Berlin-Brandenburg here.
