For the last 28 years, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) organizes yearly, the international Athens Classic Marathon event; a popular mass sport and tourist event, in which thousands of runners from Greece and abroad participate. The Athens Classic Marathon is a unique event, held on the authentic, historical, Olympic Marathon course and will take place on Sunday 31 October 2010. The Athens Classic Marathon race is dedicated to the memory of the Balkan pacifist, Grigoris Lambrakis. The originality of this race, the opportunity a runner has to run the course that was originally run by the ancient Athenian soldier and message bearer and then, by Spyros Louis, the first Olympic Champion in the Marathon event in 1896, attracts more and more runners and simple citizens every year from Greece and all over the world.

Among all the Olympic sport events, the marathon race stands out, as it was born out of a true historic and heroic event. It was a true triumph accomplished by a news-bearing foot soldier from ancient Athens, who announced – with his last words – the victory of the Greeks against the Persians during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

This year, the 2010 Athens Classic Marathon, which will be held on 31 October 2010, coincides with the celebration of the 2,500 years anniversary from the Marathon Battle, honoured throughout the year by the international Marathon and Sport Movement as well as by millions of individual runners and sport fans all around the world.
