Looking for some late summer beach fun? Catch the last rays in Europe before the sun sets on summer.

Summer is over. At least – it is in the UK. After the coldest August in 17 years, the Met Office reports that there will be no Indian summer this year. But just because autumn has arrived in Britain, doesn’t mean the fun in the sun has to end! Skyscanner introduces five great destinations for a late summer break.

Palma, Spain

An eternal favourite with the sun lovers, Palma stays warm long after the summer holidays have ended. With lively bars and inviting seas, it’s little wonder that Palma still draws visitors during autumn and it’s a great place to enjoy after the summer crowds have returned home. Flights to Palma during October start from £25 return.

Menorca, Spain

You are almost guaranteed a decent dose of autumn sun in Menorca, the second largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Here you’ll find peaceful sun-soaked holiday resorts along the south coast and a string of charming fishing villages on the island’s craggy north shore. Flights to Menorca during October start from £40 return.

Alicante, Spain

One of our most loved Spanish sun spots, Alicante is great for an autumn break and has miles of beach terrain on its doorstep. Along with all that sun, sand and water sports, (which make ideal family fun), Alicante itself is a historic Mediterranean port with picturesque harbours, café-lined streets, busy markets and flashy marinas. Flights to Alicante during October start from £32 return.

Split, Croatia

Croatia is a superb destination for autumn sun, and Split, located in the south of the country, should provide visitors with that much needed warm and sunny escape. As the second largest city in Croatia, this charming port is the gateway to the dozens of islands that lie just offshore on the Dalmatian coast. There are direct flights to Split from London airports or alternatively fly to capital Zagreb and spend a few days enjoying the city before travelling to the coast. Flights to Split during October start from £164 return.

Malta

This Mediterranean island is ideal for an autumn break as temperatures remain in the mid-twenties until the end of October. Activities on offer include sun bathing, scuba diving, plus hiking and biking. The Maltese are renowned for their hospitality, friendliness and generosity so expect a warm welcome as well as warm weather. Flights to Maltaduring October start from £42 return.
