New amenities including exclusive zero emission transport service see The Desert Island’s in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region attract further tourism attention

Desert Islands, the region’s premier nature-based tourism destination, located off the western coast of Abu Dhabi is delighted to announce a marked increase in worldwide visitors in year two of operations. The further development of the Wildlife Reserve has resonated with the adventurous and pleasure seeking travelers, offering unique and memorable experiences. In line with the development of Abu Dhabi’s tourism infrastructure and TDIC’s role as Master planners and developers, The Desert Islands continue to attract attention as one of Abu Dhabi’s star attractions.
Sir Bani Yas Island is part of a cluster of 8 islands that has staked its claim as one of the most fashionable island retreats in the Middle East, and one of the most unique tourism attractions anywhere in the world. The region, cherished by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and visited by over 30,000 visitors in its second year, is testament to Abu Dhabi’s diverse, revered cultural and environmentally sensitive tourism offering. Guests have the opportunity to experience a wide array of outdoor activities in one of the Arabian Gulf’s most sumptuous resorts and as result there has been a 20% rise year on year from guests seeking an active and exhilarating getaway.

Thanks to a variety of new attractions, including the arrival of the world’s first zero-emission electric buses, a host of new marine based activities are available for visitors of all ages, including luxury cruises and charters, a brand-new giraffe viewing platform, and the arrival of first caracal lynxes to the Arabian Wildlife Park.

Since its launch in 2009 Sir Bani Yas Island has maintained its commitment to enriching its natural surroundings and a number of services, such as the zero-emission buses, reiterate the gravity to which TDIC focuses on the environmental aspects of all its developments. The innovative and scientifically advanced zero emission transport system is the first stage in providing sustainable transport links for guests, minimizing any infrastructure impact on the Sir Bani Yas Island. The buses are tailor-made to offer the ultimate in comfort, while also presenting unforgettable views of the island’s abundant wildlife and beautiful landscapes, which are unparalleled in the region.
The launch of a new range of water activities, including cruises and charters allow visitors to enjoy the full splendor of the Arabian Gulf. Guests can choose between sunset cruises for relaxation, daytime cruises to observe the island and its marine life, or simply come aboard to learn about water navigation and sailing techniques from experienced instructors. Private, catered charters are also available for corporate events and individually tailored tours.
On the wildlife front, guests can view the island’s distinctive giraffe community up-close for the very first time thanks to the introduction of a new viewing platform. The giraffes are located in a new expansive purpose-built enclosure, where the new giraffe-height viewing platform – made completely from recycled materials, allows guests to get close to the animals without impacting their natural habitat and wellbeing.
In line with the extensive conservation program at Desert Islands, a pair of caracal lynxes has been introduced to the Arabian Wildlife Park. The pair are in the process of being re-wilded, and since their arrival two caracal kittens have been born. Interestingly, their arrival follows the successful introduction of hyenas and cheetahs to the island earlier in the year, and the subsequent birth of their cubs.
In its second year, the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara continues to prove a great success, and is the perfect spot to enjoy Sir Bani Yas Island’s new and existing attractions. Among the resorts impressive recognitions in 2010 is the hotel being recognized as one of the world’s greatest hotels in ‘Condé Nast Traveller’s 2010 Gold List’, as well as being voted ‘Best Weekend Break’ at the ‘Best in Abu Dhabi 2010’ awards ceremony. Executive Chef Anthony Galo who was previously shortlisted in the final five for ‘Chef of the Year’ at the Middle East Hotelier Awards, was also awarded the Minor Group Award of Excellence in recognition for his outstanding performance throughout 2009.
As Desert Islands enters its third year of operation a series of new developments are already underway as part of the master plan, including more tourist facilities and accommodation options. In 2011, the Sir Bani Yas Stables and Watersports centre will open offering visitors the chance to explore the island on horseback and learn the intricacies of scuba diving. Desert Islands will also facilitate large groups and conferences with the opening of the Desert Islands Conference Centre. Adding to to the accommodations available on the islands will be two new Arabian-inspired lodges that are currently in the development phase, and scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2011; one is located in the Arabian Wildlife Park and offers guests the rare opportunity to view indigenous Arabian wildlife from the comfort of their rooms; the other is located on the edge of a beautiful beach and mangrove lagoon, offering guests the opportunity to relax with the peace of the sea and abundant bird life, including white flamingos.
