The 7th Annual Asbestos Awareness Conference, Asbestos: Impact on Public Health, Environment, and the Economy, is being hosted by the largest national organization representing asbestos victims, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Origination (ADAO) from April 1-3, 2011 at the Atlanta, Georgia Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center.

The annual international conference brings together experts from around the globe to participate in discussions on occupational and non-occupational asbestos exposure issues, detection and treatment advances, environmental and economic impact, and national and global policies. Conference attendees will also learn about the most advanced and state-of-the-art medical breakthroughs, occupational and environmental asbestos exposure prevention information in addition to asbestos-related disease prevention and treatment.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen, which can lead to fatal diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that strikes the protective lining covering many of the body’s organs. Mesothelioma can take many years, even decades, to develop, but when a diagnosis is finally made, the prognosis is typically grim.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned asbestos-containing products and materials 1989, but the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, despite the known dangers, ultimately overturned it and revised the ban to only include six types of asbestos-containing materials. Insulation, floor tiles, plaster, drywall mud, roofing, and fabrics are just a few materials that contain asbestos, which are typically found in older homes. Asbestos laden products are still routinely exported and used in countries around the world, despite the overwhelming research proving its lethal hazards.

Victims of asbestos-related diseases were likely exposed to asbestos by inhaling the tiny toxic fibers, which are released from asbestos-containing materials. These hazardous fibers become lodged in the lungs and over time, the fibers cause the development of Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Over the years, mesothelioma lawyers have been successful in obtaining large jury awards and settlements in asbestos lawsuits, where families of asbestos victims have found some measure of relief.
