British Gymnastics and Judo come to Liverpool for the first time

The second half of 2011 will see great British sports make their first appearance at one of the North West’s largest indoor sporting arenas, Echo Arena Liverpool.

The most prestigious event on the British Gymnastics calendar, 2011 Women’s Artistic British Championships, heads to Liverpool for the first time on Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th July 2011.  The championship will see the country’s top female gymnasts in action, with Liverpool’s 3-time world champion, Beth Tweddle MBE, and club team-mate and 2010 British Champion Hannah Whelan as the star attractions.

The Echo Arena will seat over 6,000 fans ensuring great support for the gymnasts competing in a world-class competition environment.

The Echo will then go on to host the British Judo Association’s 2011 GB World Cup for Men taking place on Sunday 1st – Sunday 2nd October 2011.

It is the first time that the event, which is staged with support from UK Sport’s Lottery funded World Class Events Programme, will have been held in Liverpool.  Liverpool’s competition has been predicted to attract some of the world’s best judo competitors on their campaign to reach London 2012.

John Moore, Sport Manager at Echo Arena Liverpool said, “It is a fantastic coup to see Olympic qualifying events such as British Judo being staged at Echo Arena Liverpool. These, coupled with other major sporting events we have already welcomed, including the Davis Cup Tennis and Great British Basketball, confirm the diversity and venue flexibility that we can offer.”
