The non-profit organization travel2change recently launched an idea challenge that invites travelers, organizations and local communities alike to submit innovative and sustainable project ideas. The first challenge revolves around the themes of water and tourism. The best suggestions will win free trips to the project destinations and support to help the winners implement the ideas. The goal of travel2change is to foster responsible travel that can create a positive impact on local communities and can support them in a sustainable manner. The first challenge is open until 19 June 2011.
Since its recent launch, over 100 initial members have joined the online community and have submitted around 30 innovative project proposals for the idea generation challenge. One of the members suggested the “Surf Liberia” project, which aims to create a surf community run and maintained by local youth. So far, surfing in this region is a privilege reserved to visiting tourists only. Another project focuses on creating a learning experience around sanitary water and hygiene in Kenya. Its mission is to raise awareness within the local community and encourage self-sustainability.
The best ideas will be awarded and put into action in summer 2011, thanks to the support of travel partner Kuoni. The winners as well as the most active participant will win a free trip to the project destinations and receive support to collaborate with the local communities to help realize the ideas.
