The Government has underscored its commitment to the green economy with two major investments in renewable energy technology, which was announced at a press conference on 26th May at ACC Liverpool, recognised as one of Europe’s greenest meetings and events venues.

Business Secretary Vince Cable announced the start of a competition to form an Offshore Renewable Energy technology and innovation centre. The new centre will focus on technologies for offshore wind, wave and tidal power.

The landmark Liverpool venue was picked by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills for the announcement, due to its sustainability credentials which include, five 20 metre low-noise wind turbines, rainwater harvesting, zero waste to landfill and ISO 14001 accreditation.

ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, was built with efficiency and sustainability in mind and represents the only purpose-built interconnected arena and convention centre in the UK.

Further reinforcing the venue’s position as one of the UK’s most sustainable venues, the Renewable UK Association held its BWEA Offshore Wind annual conference and exhibition at ACC Liverpool in 2010, and will return in 2011 on 29th June for a two day event. The event will welcome approximately 2500 delegates and 200 exhibitors and this year requires a significant increase in exhibition space, reflecting the growing interest in the sustainable agenda.
