Seaweed powered Hypersonic jet will fly Paris to NYC in 90 mins

The news of a new ‘hypersonic’ jet that will be able to fly from Paris to New York in 90 minutes has sent waves of excitement through the Skyscanner office.

This flashy piece of kit was unveiled at the Paris Air Show this week and is rumoured to be available for commercial use by 2050.

Rather than using traditional kerosene to fire up its powerful engines, this super-plane created by EADS (owners of planemaker Airbus) is going to run on an unusual seaweed-based fuel making it emission free, a winner for the environment and a guilt-free flying option.

What does this all mean? Well, it means that if you wanted to live in Australia and work in the UK, you could, as the hypersonic commute would only take three hours!

100 passengers at a time will be able to fly at more than four times the speed of sound (up to 3,125mph), reaching a distance of 20miles from the surface of the earth.

Unsurprisingly the initial cost of a ticket is likely to be in the region of £5,000 per head, but here at Skyscanner, we’re confident that if the idea ‘takes off’, there’ll soon be a budget version hot on its heels!
