As a business events experience, Darwin has a great story to tell. And for the past three years, “MEET DARWIN – A Journey of Discovery” has been the perfect vehicle to do so.

Darwin Convention Centre announced the successful conclusion of the 2011 “MEET DARWIN” familiarisation program held 25th to 28th August 2011.

Working in close collaboration with the Northern Territory Convention Bureau, the four-day program was designed to showcase the city’s world-class business events products and experiences. It was attended by a high calibre group of decision makers from associations and events organisations all over Australia.

The Northern Territory’s capital city has undergone dramatic urbanisation in the past few years, evolving into Asia-Pacific’s emerging business hub. The new vibrancy is unmistakable throughout Darwin but unbeknown to those who have not visited the tropical harbour city for a while, or at all.

“We’re eager for everyone to discover the new face of Darwin and the unique possibilities we offer as a business event destination,” said Malu Barrios, General Manager of the Darwin Convention Centre.

“In our annual familiarisation program, we immerse participants in the unique Darwin experience and provide them opportunities to check out our business events products first hand, as well as engage with the local business community,” she added.

Setting the scene on day one a series of business sessions featured presentations about the Territory economy, Darwin’s growth industries and new infrastructure developments. This was followed by introductions to Darwin suppliers to provide relationship-building opportunities at a national level.

An active itinerary included visits to Darwin’s signature attractions such as the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT, East Point Nature Reserve, Darwin Sailing Club and the Crocosaurus Cove. The famil is regularly held to coincide with the multi-arts Darwin Festival, and the group enjoyed a live performance of world music fusion.

Jimmy Shu from the famous Hanuman Restaurants introduced the group to the exotic array of Asian produce at the bustling Parap Markets. Using ingredients sourced from the markets, he then held a cooking master class at his famous restaurant, the Hanuman.

Balanu Foundation is a not for profit organisation committed to helping Indigenous youth at risk break the cycle that leads to disadvantage. The group visited Balunu’s youth campsite where the young people shared their skills in spear throwing, basket weaving and a traditional smoking ceremony.

Feedback has been extremely positive with “Meet Darwin” participants reporting a new understanding of the destination and its potential.

“It was such an amazing experience, I was truly impressed by all that Darwin has to offer,” said Kylie Skinner, Senior Event Coordinator of Axis Events Group.

“The effort you and your team went to was brilliant and you certainly made us feel special. Additionally, and more importantly, you provided a great snapshot of what Darwin can offer and the facilities available.” remarked Simon Coburn, National Marketing Manager of AUSVEG.
