Brusselicious 2012, a celebration of gastronomy

For its tri-annual theme years, the Brussels‐Capital Region’s Government has decided to highlight gastronomy in 2012.

With Brusselicious, coordinated by VISITBRUSSELS, Brussels’ art of living comes under the spotlight. Both visitors and local people will be offered a series of experiences based on this common theme.

In total, Brusselicious 2012 will include around a hundred events associated with gastronomy (www.brusselicious.be).

What is Brusselicious XXL?

It’s an exhibition of 35 monumental sculptures some five metres high, representing several very popular Belgian products (mussels, chips, Brussels sprouts, chocolate bars and a glass of beer). These will be ‘customised’ by Belgian artists and dotted around the Region’s 19 districts from March onwards.

This exhibition will be held from the end of March to the end of June, before works are collected together and displayed from July to September in the alleys of the Brussels Park.

A call for tenders was therefore launched to many different kinds of artist. They had to come up with a project based on 3D images of five objects.

Over 120 projects were submitted to a professional jury, which then selected 35 works.

The selection was made ‘blind’, as the works were presented anonymously with just a short description of each project and a rough sketch, so as not to influence the decision of the jury members! Several Brussels art schools as well as fashion and design institutions took part in the project.

Starting in January, the selected artists will work with moulds created by Jurgen Van Overwaele. These will be made in 3D, and produced with gel coat, polyester laminate and sometimes reinforced with silicone, depending on the model.

Each work will be some 2.5m to 3m high, sticking where possible to the real proportions of the products.

Works will be placed in a public space on a base of around 2.5m, so as to enhance the visual impact and protect them from any possible attacks.

After the Brusselicious XXL event ends, you will be able to become an owner of one of these unique works.
