TUI AG, Europe’s leading tourism group, and Turkey today signed a strategic partnership agreement. The aim of the cooperation agreement, initially concluded for a period of two years, is to jointly develop the Chinese travel market for Turkey as a holiday destination.

“Turkey is an attractive destination, not just for European holidaymakers. We are planning to jointly determine the potential for Turkey in the Chinese market and launch a marketing campaign to create awareness of Turkey as a holiday destination in the Chinese market,“ said Dr Michael Frenzel, CEO of TUI AG, when signing the agreement in the framework of the International Tourism Exchange in Berlin. “I hope that this joint advertising campaign we are starting with the tour operator TUI in the People’s Republic of China can soon be used for other markets. We at the Ministry for Culture and Tourism are determined to continue in this direction“, said Ertuğrul Günay, Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism.

In the next few months, a joint working group will develop measures including strategies to raise awareness of Turkey in China. The planned measures also include a qualification programme for tour reps and measures to simplify and speed up visa processing for Chinese holidaymakers in Turkey.
Background: The Chinese National Tourism Authority (CNTA) has granted TUI China Travel Co. Ltd. an outbound licence, entitling the company to organise international travel for Chinese holidaymakers. TUI China is thus one of only three foreign companies and the only European tour operator to have received such a licence. TUI China was founded in 2003 as a joint venture between TUI AG and China Travel Service. TUI AG holds 75 per cent of the shares.
