The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) flung open its doors to the public as part of Open House Melbourne over the weekend.
More than 200 visitors streamed through the centre for guided tours on MCEC’s:
- Transformational plenary – seats can fold down to a flat floor at the press of a button
- Architecture and technology – first 6 star green star rated centre in the world
- Back of house kitchen – largest in the southern hemisphere.
MCEC’s chief executive Peter King said many Melburnians are familiar with the iconic Melbourne Exhibition Centre but less so of the Melbourne Convention Centre which opened in July 2009.
“Open House Melbourne was a great opportunity for us to show off what we do and what an enormous asset the venue is to Melbourne.
“We host almost 1000 events annually and have over 250,000 visitors, local and international, walk through our doors; Melburnians should be very proud of what we achieve here on a daily basis” said King.
Visitors receive a unique taste of Melbourne no matter where they are in the MCEC.
The floor in the grand banquet room reflects the famous rose gardens at Flemington Racecourse, the vibrant green plenary seats pay homage to the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s haloed turf and the award-winning kitchen serves up the best Victorian produce from local suppliers and farmers.
This was the first year MCEC participated in Open House Melbourne which had 135,000 visits across 100 of Melbourne’s most significant buildings over 28 and 29 July.
