Copenhagen is renowned as one of the most environmentally friendly capital cities in the world but a new survey now shows that Copenhagen is also a world leader in terms of its green economy. The 2012 Global Green Economy Index (GGEI), which measures green city reputations, ranks Copenhagen as the world’s leading green city.

The GGEI’s global survey, conducted by international consultants, Dual Citizen Inc., ranks perceptions of green performance in the main cities of 27 nations.

The survey underlines Copenhagen’s ongoing and extensive efforts towards improving its environmental sustainability. Despite increased and stringent requirements for achieving a Danish Green Key certification, a record breaking 64% of all hotel rooms in the city now hold official eco-certificates.

Denmark works to be greener
Copenhagen has also been named European Green Capital 2014, a title bestowed upon a city which has a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards; which is committed to meeting ambitious goals; and which acts as a role model to other cities.

The city also hosted the majority of meetings related to the world’s first eco-certified European Union presidency. This proved to be a great success, as Denmark achieved the ISO 20121 certification for the 2012 EU Presidency.

The Global Green Economy Index also rates Denmark as its number one country, placing it first in terms of national green economic performance and second in terms of perception.
