Yuri Grigirovich, the most important living Russian choreographer, returns to Greece after Spartacus and Swan Lake with a spectacular production of Sleeping beauty at the Badminton theatre.

Composed in 1890, Sleeping beauty is not just a wonderful play, unique in the history of ballet, but also the first ballet success for Tchaikovsky. The fairytale ballet plot is interwoven with an adventurous and touching story full of risk and bravery and with a happy end ensured by the power of love.

The play premiered on January 15, 1890 at Mariinsky theatre in Saint Petersburg, choreographed by Marius Petipa. Nine years later the Moscow premiere followed.

Seventy four years later, Yuri Grigorovich stages the play with the Bolshoi ballet, keeping a big part of Petipa’s choreography in his production.

In October 2011, Yuri Grigorovich presents Sleeping beauty with the Bolshoi again, this time to open the historic Moscow theatre after its restoration.

The show in Athens will be attended and guided by the great choreographer himself.
