THE NATIONAL TOURIST OFFICE OF SERBIA will promote the country’s culture and historical heritage as one of the main attractions of its tourism opportunities in 2013. In this respect, at FITUR Serbia will present a thousand-year-old culture that reflects the rich influences bequeathed by all of the civilisations that have settled in the region over the centuries.
Serbia’s enviable location, at the crossroads between East and West, has enabled the country to bring together some of the most spectacular cultural sights characteristic of both civilisations as part of its historical heritage. A trip along the Danube enables tourists to discover some of the fortresses and castles built by the armies of Ancient Rome and the Ottoman Empire, which still rise up majestically from the banks of the river today, including those of Vinimacium and FelixRomuliana.
Religious art is also a source of pride for the country as a whole. Among other sights, THE NATIONAL TOURIST OFFICE OF SERBIA will highlight the country’s Orthodox Monasteries, the majority of which were founded between the twelfth century and early twentieth century. Many of them have been recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In this respect, monasteries such as Studenica, close to Belgrade, present some magnificent frescos, marvellous examples of Byzantine art.
Serbia’s vibrant cultural activity is illustrated by the festivals that take place all over the country, based on both traditional culture and more modern developments. Among the most popular events, we might mention ExitFest in NoviSad, which was chosen by CNN as one of the ten best music festivals in the world in 2011. From the very beginning, this Festival has grown at an exponential rate from one year to the next, featuring guest artists of the stature of Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand and Paul Weller. At recent editions, the Festival has welcomed more than 150,000 visitors. Another outstanding event consists of the Film Festival of Kustendorf, organised by Emir Kusturica in the mountains of MokraGora.
All of these options will be promoted at FITUR 2013 as the best means of discovering Serbia’s local culture and identities.
