Some 200 art critics have confirmed it: Germany’s “Museum of the Year 2012” is to be found on Frankfurt’s famous museum embankment. But wait!
There’s more: Many other museums call the Frankfurt riverside their home.
Frankfurt/Main. Last week in Düsseldorf, the German section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) declared Frankfurt’s Städel Museum as Germany’s official “Museum of the Year 2012”.
It is suggested that the main reason for the Städel Museum receiving this accolade is its successful blend of international art history and aesthetic form of presentation. Opened in February 2012, the museum’s brand-new 3,000-sq/m
underground extension is now home to the Städel’s superb collection of contemporary art, which features countless masterpieces dating from 1945 to present day.
The museum’s great popularity is yet another reason for its success.
In 2012, the Städel attracted over 440,000 visitors, placing it at the very top of the list. The exhibition titled “Dark Romanticism. From Goya to Max Ernst” was particularly popular amongst art enthusiasts. Having completed its stint here in Frankfurt, the exhibition is now moving on to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, where it will be on show from 04th March to 09th June 2013.
The Städel Museum is known to be one of the strongest spectator magnets of the “Frankfurt Museum Embankment”, an artistically and architectonically unique building ensemble situated along the River Main. Here, museum-goers will find
some 26 museums scenically set on or near Frankfurt’s majestic waterway, presenting collections that focus on art (incl. the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection, Schirn Kunsthalle and the Museum of Modern Art), technology (incl.
the Museum of Communication) and cultural history (incl. the Museum of World Cultures).
