National Glass Centre at UniSpace Sunderland to host Sunderland’s Big WalkNational Glass Centre, part of UniSpace Sunderland, will host the BIG Walk on 22nd September, acting as the starting line for the 11.5 mile walk around the cultural sights of Sunderland. The event will also feature an aerobic warm on the huge glass roof at the Centre, offering those taking part unique views across the City.

The Sunderland BIG Walk offers participants the opportunity to take in some of the best scenery and historic sites the city has to offer. The event follows the annual BIG Bike Ride which returned to UniSpace Sunderland’s Sir Tom Cowie campus earlier this year, attracting over 500 cyclists.

Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture said: “This year the Sunderland Big Walk will begin at the iconic National Glass Centre on the banks of the Wear, which has recently re-opened following £2.25 Million re-development and will take in our fabulous riverside and the centuries of history that it holds. We have two routes, a 6.5 mile walk ending at Washington Wetlands Centre and an 11.5 mile walk which ends at the top of Penshaw Hill.”

After the BIG Walk a shuttle bus service will take walkers back to National Glass Centre where they can re-charge their batteries in the Brasserie, which was recently taken over by 1879 Events Management, a subsidiary company of Sunderland Football Club.

The BIG Walk is part of Active Sunderland, Sunderland’s Community Sport & Physical Activity Network. For more information visithttp://www.activesunderland.org.uk.
