With Summertime drawing to an end and Summer holidays not in the pipeline for another eight months it’s time to focus on city breaks, they are perfect for short getaways at anytime of the year. SportsDirect.com take a look at the hottest places to go in 2013/2014.

One of the main highlights of going on a city break is that they are just as enjoyable and fun whatever the weather as they are more focussed on seeing the sights and getting to know the culture rather than basking in the sunshine and relaxing. Also, they are great for getting away half way through the year.

There are of course the big contenders such as New York,  London, Paris and Tokyo that people will always refer to as the must see cities. However, recently smaller, more low key cities have started to compete with them.

Firstly there is Lisbon. The Portuguese city boasts both historical sights combined with new collections such as the Orient and Berado museums and the MUDE Design and Fashion Museum. It also boasts gothic cathedrals, monasteries and plenty of bars, restaurants and nightclubs to keep you entertained throughout the night as well as being tipped as being transformed into an appetising new destination by ucityguides.com.

Next up is Warsaw. Flattened in WW2 Warsaw has now been dubbed as one of the newest gems of Europe. Not only is Warsaw home to a great club and music scene with street festivals and quirky art, but it is also home to some must see museums. Lonely Planet said the Warsaw Rising Museum set a standard for a new generation of engaging, interactive exhibitions, so if a rich mixture of lively music and museums sounds appealing visit Warsaw!

Formerly the European Capital of Culture back in 2010, Istanbul is now renowned for its rooftop bars, restaurants and overall vibrant life. This combined with the imperial mosques spectacular display of galleries, museums and festivals there really is a little bit of everything thrown for everyone to enjoy.

Helsinki is best known for its harbour and is seen as being a sea-town with half of the city seeming to be water. However, it also boasts a cool ambiance, without even trying thanks to the Art Nouveau buildings, hi-tech society and energetic night life. The Helsinki Design Week is also one to watch out for and further showcases how stylish the city is.

With a contemporary art scene and edgy clubs Naples is definitely a city worth visiting. Being one of the biggest cities in Southern Italy, Naples boasts a lively atmosphere but is also home to winding streets, small shops and historic treasures and is an introduction to multiculturalism. The volcanic Campi Flegrei is also situated to the West of Naples is worth visiting thanks to the classic ruins and beach clubs.
