August 2014 marks the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War (WW1). This long and insufferable conflict is remembered for being one of the worst in world history, claiming the lives of over 16 million people across the globe.
In order to commemorate the centenary of this event, the UK government is working alongside partners including Imperial War Museums, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to create a programme of cultural events and activities.
In London there will be a variety of projects to raise awareness of the Great War including insightful lectures and talks, as well as workshops and art exhibitions. In addition structures and spaces will be specially created to honour the soldiers and civilians who died.
The full order of First World War centenary events will span from the anniversary of the outbreak of war in 2014 until that of Armistice Day in 2018. Across the globe communities and individuals will come together to mark and remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died.
