After being hosted in Geneva (in 2014) and Toronto (in 2016), it will arrive in Florence in 2018 and will be attended by over 2000 delegates from all over the world. This is the International Conference on Mass Spectrometry (IMSC), an opportunity for confrontation, dialogue and exchange of experiences among scientists, researchers and practitioners of a scientific discipline, the mass spectrometry, whose application is extended to many areas such as doping, the adulteration of food, environmental analysis and diagnosis in the medical field.
It will be an important opportunity to relaunch the research in mass spectrometry among Tuscan universities, to spread and enhance the services and applications in the public and private institutions that use mass spectrometry.
Florence officially won the event a few days ago during the 2014 edition of the Congress, winning against two major conference destinations in Europe: Maastricht and Barcelona.
In Geneva, Professor Gianluca Giorgi (University of Siena), Chairman of the Division of Mass Spectrometry of the Italian Society of Chemistry, presented the bid which could win thanks to the combination of knowledge and skills provided by several key players in the national and Florentine scene : the Division of Mass Spectrometry, who developed the scientific part, Florence Convention Bureau, which played the role of representative of the destination and the Florentine PCO ENIC Meetings & Events, which was in charge of drafting the budget.
The 22nd edition of IMSC will take place in the beautiful setting of Fortezza da Basso, the congress center of Florence, at the end of August 2018.
The economic impact expected on the Florentine territory is very positive: according to estimates by the convention bureau, the conference, which will have a duration of 7 days, will produce a total turnover of approximately 6 million euro, an economic impact of € 2 million and a half and about 12,000 overnight stays.
