IFEMA will start the final quarter of the year by hosting five major international congresses in September and October, bringing together some 50,000 participants from around the globe;
WPA, the 16th World Congress of Psychiatry (14-18 September); ESMO, the European Society of Medical Oncology (26-30 September); the 13th Annual World Congress of the Human Proteome Organization(5-8 October); Aviation Week MRO Europe(7-9 October), and International No-Dig Madrid (13-15 October).
The first medical science gathering staged in Madrid will be the 16th World Congress of Psychiatry, which is titled “Focusing on Access, Quality and Humane Care” and will deal with the current needs of mental health patients in all regions of the world.
The previous edition held in Buenos Aires in 2011 attracted over 14,000 participants from 112 countries and the organisers of the forthcoming congress, which takes place in Madrid from 14 to 18 September, estimate that over 15,000 psychiatry professionals and scientists will participate.
This major global gathering includes a total of 65 scientific sections in its programme that will disseminate the very latest information and promote the collaborative work between professionals within the different fields of psychiatry.
The numerous topics covered in the scientific programme of this major congress will include the latest advances in the management of bipolar disorders; neurology and addictions; ethical aspects of modern day psychiatry; psychiatric illnesses in children and their prevention; prevention in psychiatry; behavioural and anxiety disorders; ethical principals in psychiatry; the family and severe mental disorders; the “homeless” and initial behavioural problems; food disorders; the latest electroconvulsive therapy treatments; and child mental health
This tri-annual congress is organised by the World Psychiatry Association in conjunction with the Spanish Neuropsychiatry Association (AEN), the Portuguese Psychiatry Society and the Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
These bodies have developed an attractive, high-quality scientific programme that encompasses the new psychiatric challenges of the 21st century such as clinical outcomes, research and social structures, areas in which great strides have been made but where there is still a long way to go to achieve the goal of building the psychiatry of the future.
The WPA is an association of national psychiatric associations which strives to increase the knowledge and skills required to work efficiently in the field of mental health today, including care for the mentally ill.
It is made up of 135 member societies spanning 117 countries and representing more than 200,000 psychiatrists.
In addition to the World Congress of Psychiatry, the WPA organises other international and regional congresses and meetings, and themed conferences.
It has also produced several educational programmes and series of specialist books.
In addition, the WPA has developed ethical guidelines for psychiatric practice, including the Madrid Declaration (1996).
The WPA will be staged at the same time as the largest fashion and trends event in southern Europe, comprising the MOMAD METRÓPOLIS, INTERGIFT, BISUTEX, MADRID JOYA and MBFWM fairs. In total, these gatherings are expected to generate some €150 million in Madrid.
