Adelaide, South Australia has been named as the host city for the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) International Symposium – the largest annual gathering of systems engineers in the world.
A site inspection by the conference organiser in early 2014 was key to securing the event with the visitors obviously impressed with the breadth of related industries in South Australia as well as Adelaide’s conference and leisure offering.
The event to be held in the traditionally quieter tourism period of winter in 2017 is set to set to attract 750 delegates over 4 days adding $4.7M to the state’s visitor economy.
Damien Kitto, CEO Adelaide Convention Bureau said “the win is a win/win relationship for both Adelaide and the event. Traditionally INCOSE has been focussed on the defence sector, one of the reasons Adelaide was chosen as the host city because it offers the ability for the event to diversify.
“Adelaide provides a platform to further expand INCOSE’s reach to the health, mining and transport sectors with all industries having a strong presence in South Australia. This expansion of the traditional delegate base has the potential to significantly increase delegate and exhibitor numbers” said Mr Kitto.
The Systems Engineering Society of Australia, a technical society of Engineers Australia worked with the Adelaide Convention Bureau, South Australian Government and its Team Adelaide partners to secure the event for Adelaide.
Shaun Wilson, President of Systems Engineering Society of Australia said “systems engineering is at the heart of all large and complex projects, and is vital to not only the defence industry but to mining, oil and gas, health, telecommunications, civil infrastructure, emergency services, transport and rail.”
“The symposium will bring together complex systems practitioners across industries, looking to grow the non-defence interest in systems engineering,” he said.
The conference will include an exhibition component at the redeveloped Adelaide Convention Centre with exhibitors likely to include companies such as IBM and Siemens as well as leading engineering universities from around the world.
“Hosting the calibre of these companies and some of the most respected systems engineers in the world in Adelaide is invaluable to local industry and our own systems engineers and Universities. The eyes of the world will be thrust firmly upon our achievements in the lead up to and during the event – the networking and potential investment opportunities are priceless” said Mr Kitto.
