By using Trekker, the Google tool that provides the innovative ability to display images of 360 degrees and outermost points of a region, guests of Hersonissos Municipality will soon have the opportunity to “explore” through their computer even the more inaccessible beauties of the region.
For about two weeks the Google Trekker is located in the Municipality of Hersonissos (it should be noted that is used for the first time by a municipality in Greece). The above action is completed after several months of efforts by the Deputy Mayor of Tourism Mr. Efthymis Mountrakis and by the Special Tourism Advisor Mr. Minas Liapakis, and it will remain in the Municipality of Hersonissos for about two more months to complete the mapping process of climbing routes, the beaches, paths, footpaths of the villages and of any location the Google Street View vehicle can’t have access.
The Google Trekker is a portable device that weighs about 18 pounds, has the size of a large hiking backpack and is worn by the operator. As he navigates, fifteen (15) consecutive cameras automatically collect images every 2.5 seconds with little overlap. These pictures are stitched into a single image of 360° and thereby are created 360° panoramas in Google Maps.
The Google Street View allows any travel destination to show its unique places through 360° photographs of top quality. Its benefits are multiple as millions of users visit daily Google Street View, either to navigate virtual to familiar places or to explore new locations.
Using Google Trekker will allow the Municipality of Hersonissos to bring out the beauty of the sites in a joint approximately of 70 million users of Google Maps attracting thus prospective travelers. Other promotional actions will also follow that will be announced soon. The potential of virtual tours not only improves the travel experience, but is also a dynamic tourism industry tool for revealing the beautiful landscapes of each destination to a global audience.
Beaches of Hersonissos have already photographed from the sea to the mainland by shoots that were made through boat with the help of HCMR.
It is worth mentioning that Google Trekker use, began in 2012 and to date has traveled in incredible and breathtaking natural wonders and world heritage sites like the Grand Canyon, the Taj Mahal, the Angkor Wat, the Islands of Galapagos, even in trails in Venice.
