COLOGNE, 26 September 2016. From 25 to 29 September, the place to be for the international pathology community is Cologne. For the first time the International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP) – a joint venture with the European Society of Pathology (ESP) – is taking place in the city. 450 speakers will cover all aspects of the priority theme chosen for the Congress: Pathology, Guiding and Monitoring Therapy. Over one hundred exhibitors from the field of diagnostics and therapy are on hand to showcase their services in a 1,124 sqm exhibition space. A private organ concert in Cologne Cathedral, guided tours around the city and an evening closing event at the riverside club Tanzbrunnen will round off the Congress agenda for 4,000 delegates.
A spotlight event for Cologne, the city of science
The Congress is hosted by the German Division of IAP and by ESP. The head office of the IAP’s German Division is in Bonn, just south of Cologne, and it maintains a partnership with the University of Bonn, so the Rhineland was a natural choice as the Congress venue.
For years, almost every weekend scientists and researchers have congregated here to discuss their latest research activities. For Prof Dr Sigurd Lax, President of IAP’s German Division, the Congress is a clear indicator of its international orientation – in fact, it is IAP’s second largest division after North America. Cologne was quickly selected as the Congress venue given that it offered the right capacities and an international atmosphere.
According to Congress Presidents Prof Dr Dietmar Schmidt (IAP) and Prof Dr Pierre Bedossa (ESP), continued professional training and dialogue are at the heart of this event. The fact that the biennial International Congress is now coming to Cologne after Cape Town and Bangkok is particularly pleasing for Prof Dr Reinhard Büttner, Director of the Institute of Pathology at University Hospital Cologne and a co-organiser of the Congress. “This is another great opportunity for Cologne to display its assets as an innovative and attractive city of science that is home to a large number of institutions, which offer a close-knit network for the international research and science community. As a top-level oncology centre, our Institute is delighted to have this chance to discuss the role of pathology in cancer research.”
Congress delegates will have an opportunity to visit the molecular pathology labs and meet the experts at Network Genomic Medicine (NGM) and the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) at University Hospital Cologne. Christian Woronka, Head of the Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB), is also proud to host this international event in Cologne after years of preparation. “We are delighted to welcome the international pathology scene to our city this year.
