Debut for the European Capital of Smart Tourism at ITB Berlin

The deadline for submitting innovative tourism projects is 10 May 2019

Following the launch of the awards in 2018 the European Capital of Smart Tourism Initiative will be represented at ITB Berlin with the winners, Lyon und Helsinki. Visitors to Stand 213 in Hall 1.1 can find out about the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2020 and innovative tourism services for tourist in Lyon and Helsinki, the European Capitals of Smart Tourism 2019.

Die European Capital of Smart Tourism Initiative recognises cities in the EU for intelligent, innovative and inclusive tourism projects. The European Commission, which conceived the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism, recently announced the launch of the 2020 event. Last year, Helsinki and Lyon were able to head off 38 competitors.

On Thursday, 7 March from 11 to 11.30 a.m. on the eTravel Stage in Hall 6.1, under the heading of ‘Helsinki and Lyon Went Smart: Digital Technology at the Service of Tourism Destinations’, representatives of both winning cities will present their respective best practices. Participants can find out more about the launch of the competition for the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2020 at an information event on Thursday 7 March from 4 to 5 p.m. (Room Lindau 3, Meeting Bridge A).

EU cities competing for the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2020 must be able to demonstrate innovative tourism measures in the following areas: accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity. The winners of this year’s competition will receive communications and brand marketing support in 2020, including for the production of a promotional video and a large sculpture, which will be installed in a prominent location, as well as for a wide range of promotional measures and visibility at EU level. Furthermore, based on the assessments of experts, the four cities which achieve the highest points in the individual categories will receive the European Smart Tourism Awards 2020.
