One of the most significant events in Greece’s history, the Naval Battle of Spetses, is celebrated every September on Attica’s stunning island, with grand festivities that last a whole week and culminate with the spectacular reenactment of the historic battle. From 2 until 8 September, Spetses island will once again be “flooded” with thousands of Greek and international visitors, who will experience the one-of-a-kind Armata Festival 2019!
Armata commemorates the major heroic act of Spetsiots that took place on 8 September 1822, with a comprehensive programme of cultural events and festivities for children and adults, including painting exhibitions, concerts, choir music, traditional and modern dances, theatrical performances, sailing and swimming races, cannon fire and more.
On Saturday 7 September don’t miss the highlight of the Armata Festival, the reenactment of the historic battle with the burning of the Turkish Flagship replica, with simultaneous narration of the historic events. The fascinating spectacle culminates in a visual feast of fireworks that fill Spetses sky with extraordinary colours.
Throughout the Armata Festival, the characteristic blue and red flag of the 1821 Greek War of Independence adorns the whole town, the houses and historical buildings of Spetses, as well as the traditional fishing boats and sea taxis in the harbour. The words of the Greek battle cry “Freedom or Death” written on the flag are framed by blue that symbolises freedom and red that symbolises the blood of Spetsiot heroes that was shed in battle.
Armata Festival is the greatest and most fascinating event in Spetses and ideal occasion for a visit to the majestic Saronic island!
